Straight Talk GSM ZTE Illustra Z788G Full Review

The Straight Talk ZTE Illustra Z788G is a new GSM 2.3 Android Gingerbread. The ZTE Illustra is somewhat of an upgrade to the popular ZTE Merrit. The most notable upgrade on the Illustra is the fact that it comes with an 800 mhz processor so you get 200 more MHZ over the Merrit.

The ZTE Illustra is an affordable device that essentially replaces the popular Straight Talk ZTE Merit. The Illustra has some notable upgrades over the Merrit, namely in the form of an 800mhz processor over the Merit's anemic 600mhz unit. Another area worthy of mention is the fact that the clunky looking push buttons are gone on the Illustra making it a more modern and much more attractive phone. The gray bezel is also quite nice and makes this phone stand out so it is no longer a generic looking device. Now for the bad is the fact that the phone comes with the old Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS.

Features And Performance

Performance and features on this device are on par with other phones in it's price range. Keep in mind that this phone comes in at around $100 so don't expect this to be a spectacular device. That said, you do get all of the popular Android features which include Google plan, Youtube, GPS, WiFi, Google Maps, etc. Overall, performance is what you would expect on a device at this price range. It performs a whole lot better than the lowly 600mhz devices and lets you do all of the stuff that makes the Android OS so great. That said, it would have been a whole lot nicer to get Android 4.0 on this phone as it would boost performance by quite a bit.

Wrapping it Up

The Illustra is a capable entry level device that is both affordable and pretty stylish for the price. The gray bezel makes this phone stand out which is always nice on a phone like this since most end up looking quite generic. That is not the case with this one. About the only disappointing thing on the phone is the fact that you don't get Android 4.0. Other than that, this phone is not a bad choice considering the low price and feature set.
